Summary: Plasma levels of progesterone, unconjugated oestradiol and unconjugated oestriol have been measured by radio‐immunoassay methods in 33 normal pregnant women serially from 28 weeks of gestation until term. The mean concentrations of all 3 hormones were found to increase steadily with advancing pregnancy. Expressing results relative to the actual day of delivery revealed no evidence of significant changes in trends in progesterone and/or oestradiol levels which could be indicative of an endocrine mechanism leading to onset of labour. The progesterone:oestradiol ratio remained relatively constant during the last few weeks of pregnancy while the progesterone: oestriol ratio showed a slight decrease.
