Summary: The genesis and implementation of a continuing obstetric audit in Tasmania is described. The survey includes all public and private deliveries in Tasmania. Some of the early difficulties and their resolution are discussed. Because of its simplicity, the suggestion has been made that such a system would be suitable for a national audit.
