Summary: The mother who is discharged from an obstetric unit after confinement and leaves her baby behind faces a number of psychological problems. These can be related to the emotional crises initiated when the baby is admitted to a special care ward and to the absence of normal mother‐infant bonding. The child faces increased risks on going home. Group discussion is one technique to support these mothers. Anxieties and fears, as expressed in such groups, are discussed in this paper.
