Summary: Seventy‐four of 101 fifth year medical students doing obstetrics and gynaecology completed a questionnaire concerning the characteristics of an ‘ideal teacher’. The results of the survey show that these students ranked teacher characteristics related to the gathering of information more highly than other characteristics. Concepts of student preparation for classes and feedback on progress with a subject were regarded by students as being much less important, while reference to latest developments in the subject was regarded as being of least importance.
