Summary: A prospective study was made of 44 patients with cholestatic jaundice of pregnancy. Serial urinary oestriol, pregnanediol and plasma progesterone levels were measured in addition to liver function tests. Spontaneous premature labour occurred in 41% of patients, and there were three unexplained stillbirths (7%). Whilst the occurrence of premature labour and the severity of pruritus was often related to the degree of hyperbilirubinaemia and cholestasis, this was not invariable. Furthermore, perinatal wastage did not correlate closely with the disturbance of liver function or with steroid levels within 72 hours of delivery.
