The Value of Fetal Radiography When Maternal Oestriol Excretion is Subnormal

Summary: Two hundred and fifty consecutive patients with subnormal urinary oestriol excretion were studied. Radiological assessment of fetal bone age showed a delay of at least 4 weeks in 22 of 61 (36%) with intrauterine growth retardation and in 7 of the remaining 189 (4%) without this complication. Variance between radiological and clinical assessments of gestational age should be initially interpreted as an indication of growth retardation rather than prematurity or wrong dates.
