Summary: The nature and function of the Laufe's divergent forceps is briefly described. This instrument has now been in use in Canberra for 2 1/2 years. It has been found easy to apply and safe to use, and has found general acceptance. It has become the instrument of choice for outlet forceps delivery. Its acceptance and further study in other obstetrical units is recommended.
