Summary: Urinary oestriol values were below normal on 1 or more occasions in 7 of 14 patients whose fetuses had hydrocephalus. The obstetric records of 132 patients delivered of such infants showed that the incidence of intra‐uterine growth retardation was doubled, and 4 fetuses had adrenal hypoplasia. Mothers of hydrocephalic fetuses had an increased incidence of prenatal complications which tend to be associated with low oestriol excretion. Hydrocephalus intrinsically is not associated with poor feto‐placental function.
