Summary An analysis has been made of the results of investigation and treatment of patients with anovulation and oligo‐ovulation who attended a gynaecological endocrine clinic. This has revealed the need for a careful evaluation of the parameters for detecting ovulation and demonstrates the fallacy of using a single parameter as an indicator of ovulation. A scheme of management is proposed which takes into account the value of treatment with placebo and cyclic hormone therapy and which may help to elucidate the problem of failure to achieve pregnancy when the use of clomiphene followed by HCG has presumably resulted in ovulation.
