Summary The results of a pilot trial of the effects of the β‐mimetic drug Du21220 on uterine activity in 6 patients is reported. Du21220 was found to be an effective uterine relaxant. The only cardiovascular side‐effect was a rise in maternal heart‐rate. Practolol did not reverse the uterine inhibitory effect of Du21220, and in the one patient where tachycardia was marked, it produced a significant lowering of the heart‐rate, which suggests that practolol may be a useful adjunct to Du21220 to counteract the tachycardia which may occur. Neither drug caused hypotension.
