Summary The spontaneous respiratory rates which occurred in normal labour have been timed during and between contractions, in calm patients. Respiratory rate in early first stage labour is not significantly influenced by contractions. With the progression of normal labour, the rate during contractions increases, particularly in late first stage when it is doubled. The rates of the psychoprophylaxis (Lamaze) method breathing exercises for late labour are very much higher than those which occur in normal, untrained patients at this stage.
