Summary and Conclusions Shute's parallel forceps are described together with the technique required for their use. Experience with 76 “difficult” vaginal deliveries is recorded. The advantages of the instrument are described. They are comparable to Kiel‐land's forceps, but are easier to apply and rotation and delivery can be carried out with great ease, usually with local anaesthesia. There is a minimum of trauma to the fetus and a pleasing lack of disfigurement to its face and scalp.
