It is known that the gastric emptying time may be prolonged in women in labour, yet not all anaesthetists are agreed that the gastric contents should be evacuated prior to obstetric anaesthesia. The dangerous effects of regurgitation and inhalation of acid gastric content have often been stressed since Mendelson's paper of 1946.
