Summary: One hundred consecutive cases of cone biopsy have been reviewed. The complication rate, particularly that of cervical stenosis and primary haemorrhage, was found to be higher than in other reported series. The frequency of complications and the large number of inadequate specimens is related to the poor techniques used. Various technical details have been discussed and compared with those used in other series. Cone biopsy is still the most generally useful method of diagnosis of carcinoma in situ. As a definitive method of treatment the value of cone biopsy was lessened by the high infertility rate in this series.
