Summary:1 An analysis of 52 consecutive patients with uterine cancer treated by Wertheim hysterectomy from 1957 to 1960 is presented. 2 A method of post‐operative drainage utilizing suction applied to an indwelling T‐tube passing through the vaginal vault is described. 3 There was no operative mortality and the operative fistula rate was less than 2%. 4 Two lymphocysts were observed, but both disappeared spontaneously. 5 The convalescent period was generally improved. 6 The results accord with the authors' theory that accumulated blood in the pelvic cavity after radical surgery leads to infection and obstruction of both urinary and lymphatic channels.
