Summary:1 The normal phonocardiogram of the foetus in utero is described. The commonly observed variants are indicated. 2 Phonocardiography is a simple and practical method of activating an instantaneous ratemeter for continuous foetal heart monitoring. Successful recordings were obtained in 84% of cases. 3 Examples of normal and abnormal tracings are illustrated. Variations in rate and rhythm may be detected early by monitoring. 4 The value of continuous monitoring of the foetal heart is outlined.
