Summary: A brief description of the indications, technique and complications of symphysiotomy has been given. The details of its use in 8 patients have been described; the immediate results in 7 of these patients were considered to be satisfactory. Because of the peculiar conditions in New Guinea, it seems that there is a greater place there for symphysiotomy than in more advanced countries.
