Summary1 A review of 50 cases of prolapse of the umbilical cord is presented. 2 The important aetiological factors are: malpresentations, prematurity, multiple pregnancy, hydramnios and placenta praevia. Parity is a relatively unimportant aetiological factor. 3 The degree of cervical dilatation is of prime importance in determining the method of treatment. 4 The foetal mortality in this series was 50%. When the foetal heart was present on admission the mortality was 35.9%. There were no maternal deaths. 5 Proper antenatal care, early diagnosis and the more liberal use of Caesarean section will help in the reduction of foetal loss.
