Summary1 The anatomy of the occipital bone, including its ossification at the time of birth, is described. 2 The relationship of the obstetrical hinge joint of Budin to the changes in shape of the foetal skull in labour is shown. 3 The prominence of the occipital protuberance and the superior curved lines of the occipital bone become useful landmarks due to moulding of the foetal head. 4 This landmark is of great value in the diagnosis of foetal position.
