Nine new fibre reactive dyes containing a built‐in hydroxybenzophenone moiety were synthesised, characterised using electrospray mass spectroscopic analysis, applied to cotton fabrics and the ultraviolet protection factor values of the dyed cotton fabrics determined. The results showed that the anti‐ultraviolet properties of cotton were improved by dyeing with dyes containing a built‐in hydroxybenzophenone moiety, but that the benzophenone ultraviolet absorber need not be covalently linked to dye molecules to provide significant benefit.
