A simple method has been developed to replicate, on the laboratory scale, the effects of seam penetration in the dyeing of garments using reactive dyes. Additionally, an instrumental method to assess quantitatively the efficacy of seam penetration has been devised which utilises ImageMaster technology. The results obtained instrumentally were compared with the mean visual assessments of a panel of 15 observers. Results of the two techniques were in excellent agreement.
