The second part of this paper traces the development of truly synthetic fibres together with the auxiliary chemicals required in processing. Developments in dyes are also reviewed. The emergence of the chemical giants is chronicled together with cartel formation. The development of the American petrochemicals industry, together with war time shortages in Europe, are discussed.
