An azo dye containing a β‐sulphatoethylsulphonyl and a dimercaptotriazinyl group has been synthesised. Application to cellulose under exhaust and pad‐batch conditions gave virtually quantitative levels of exhaustion and ‘fixation’. Spectral, chromatographic, solubility and chemical evidence suggest dye immobilisation via a polymerisation mechanism rather than by covalent bond fixation.
