An attempt was made to enhance the effectiveness of two commercial cationic fixing agents in improving the wash fastness of three commercial direct dyes on cotton. A syntan was subsequently applied to the aftertreated dyeings and the possible beneficial effect of this additional treatment on the fastness of the dyeings to the ISO C06/C2 wash test was assessed. Use of the syntan marginally enhanced the effectiveness of the cationic fixing agents but the effect of the syntan was both dye‐ and fixing agent‐specific.
