This paper introduces the Voluntary Registration Scheme (VRS) for harmless dyestuffs, an initiative of the Hong Kong government, in response to the introduction of the German regulation stipulating a ban on the production import, and sale of consumer goods containing azo colorants produced from certain amines (4th Amendment Regulation to the Consumer Products Regulations). In presenting reasons for the use of Internet as an effective means of overcoming import restrictions and remaining up–to–date on all issues of importance to the environment, the paper further suggests evaluation and corrective maintenance of the database for optimal utility. Though the VRS is of local origin, the international usefulness of such a service is also highlighted.
