Bifunctional reactive dyes have been found to form crosslinks in silk. These have a significant effect on the solubility of the fibre. Solubility tests can therefore be used to assess the degree of crosslinking in the fibre. A slight improvement in the mechanical properties of silk dyed with bifunctional reactive dyes has been observed.
