The principles of the first system of controlled light‐fastness testing can still be found in today's blue wool scale. However, there exists a need for substrate‐specific light‐fastness standards. J Guthrie, N Tayan and L Wilson describe the development and problems of light‐fastness testing, and give a brief account of their attempts to create such a tailored testing scale.
