The poor substantivity to dyes limits the use of aramid fibres. Textile dyeing is normally possible only with the aid of large quantities of carrier. Pretreating aramid fibres with liquid ammonia renders the fibre dyeable with basic dyes at levels of fastness similar to those achieved with the conventional carrier procedure.
