The history of ceramic colorants is reviewed, from around 1700 BC when iron earths and copper compounds were used by Egyptian potters, to the latest developments. An outline of the present day manufacture of ceramic colorants and modern process control procedures is presented. All the major types of ceramic colorants are described together with details of their development, properties and uses. Ideas for directions for future research in this area are discussed.
