Phillip Lowe once had a glorious dream. He dreamt that all the authorities in the UK — the government, the Bank of England, the Treasury — recognised the key role of manufacturing to sustaining and improving the quality of life of our people. And, within industry, he dreamt that directors and managers held an optimistic view of the commercial opportunities world‐wide and had the ability to organise and motivate their colleagues. Then he awoke and the dream was gone…
