It is not widely appreciated that the British textile printing industry started in London. Cotton, silk and linen printing all took root in the capital in the late seventeenth century as a result of growing trade with India and the Far East. Matthew Castle traces a brief history of the only surviving printing firm from these early days, David Evans & Co., based in the Kentish town of Crayford.
