The strong ‘green’ lobby that has grown up in recent years has led to actual and proposed legislation on environmental pollution that is causing problems to textile finishers. The first part of the paper deals with this legislation and the balance that must be achieved for the survival of the industry. The second part puts forward suggestions for the requirements of the industry in terms of research to meet environmental needs in the 21st century.
