This paper deals with the modification of azo dyes with α N‐ß‐hydroxyethyl group by acetylation, benzoylation, and terephthaloylation. These modified dyes were characterised by elemental analysis and melting point determination. Lower melting points were observed in acetylated dyes. Structural analyses were carried out by using visible, i.r., 1 H‐n.m.r. and mass spectroscopic techniques. A hypsochromic shift was observed on acylating the hydroxy dyes. The thermal stability of dyes was evaluated by dynamic thermogravimetric analysis, and acylation was found to cause an increase in thermal stability.
