The various measures for reducing health risk in the use and handling of organic colorants (dyestuffs and organic pigments) are outlined. To this end, the necessary analysis of exposure and hazard potential in determining the risk level is discussed. Of prime importance is the need for clear information on the safety‐related properties of the colorants and the measures to be taken for lowering exposure. If all these elements are seriously considered then the technical use of colorants and the handling involved are possible without any danger to health.
