The technical and economic factors that govern the selection of dyes by the wool dyer are discussed with reference to specific examples. Such data help to quantify the complex interplay between these competing requirements and to establish their relative importance in a given set of circumstances. The technical and economic limitations imposed by the need to eliminate metamerism are illustrated. There is a substantial price to be paid in meeting the highest standards of product quality and fastness in wool dyeing.
