The redox behaviour of some aminonaphthoquinonoid dyes including quinoxalinequinones, 2‐arylamino‐1,4‐naphthoquinones and indonaphtholes have been investigated with the aim of developing new colour former systems for use as heat‐and pressure‐sensitive functional dyes. These dyes were found generally to absorb light over a wide region of the spectrum, some of the absorption being caused by the quinone‐quinoneimine tautomerism of the dyes. The dyes were reduced to the corresponding colourless leuco forms, which were readily reoxidised to the coloured forms in the presence of atmospheric oxygen or oxidising agent. The spectral characteristics of coloured and leuco forms of the dyes were examined.
