Phenothiainquinonoid dyes were found to absorb at much longer wavelengths(50–70 nm) than the corresponding phenoxazinequinone and N, N‐dihydrophenzinequinone analogues, and are approximately 100 nm more bathochromic than the corresponding arylaminoanthraquinoid dyes. Several types of phenothiazinequinonoid spectra have been compared with those of the related quinonoid dyes. The effects of the epi‐thio group in phenothiazinequinones on their absorption spectra were evaluated by the PPP MO method, and the colour‐structure relationships for the related dyes are discussed.
