2–(m–Nitrobenzoyl) benzoic acid, a γ–keto acid, has been condensed with various phenols to synthesise some novel analogues of phthalein dyes. The products so obtained are unsymmetrically substituted phthalides, ir which the central triphenylmethane carbon is attached tc two different rings. Structures of these new dyes were established by elemental analysis, chemical reactions anc infra–red studies. Their absorption maxima have been determined in ethanol (neutral and alkaline media) and are found to be shifted like those of true phthaleins.
