The relationship between popularity or commercial demand for different colours and their position in the colour gamut is discussed with examples in the field of synthetic–polymer yarn dyeing. Such considerations have a part to play in the rational selection of dye ranges. The key role of the dyehouse laboratory in dye evaluation and testing is outlined. Improvements in physical form and suitability of disperse dyes for a growing range of application criteria have taken much development effort in recent years and these advances have kept pace with corresponding progress in equipment and techniques for dye dispensing.
