The use of the f.m.i.r. technique in i.r. spectroscopy is proposed for the determination of the finish in flame‐retarded acrylic fabrics. The spectrum band occurring at 2250 cm ‐1 , which corresponds to the nitrite group, is used as an internal standard in the fabric/finish absorbance relationship and this enables the concentration of finish on different flame‐retarded specimens to be measured.
