Although conventional chemical methods of analysis make a major contribution to the identification, analytical investigation and diagnosis of faults in textiles, much useful information can be gained quickly and easily by the use of dyes in simple tests which exploit the known dye‐uptake or dye‐resist characteristics of untreated or modified fibres and blends. This review outlines some of these possibilities, specifically referring to the identification of different fibre types, examination of degraded or damaged material, assessment of the intrinsic dyeability and degree of dye‐affinity variation in synthetic filament yarns, and investigation of the type and uniformity of distribution of synthetic‐resin material in finished fabrics.
