This review gives an outline of the development of carpet printing followed by the current situation and is then divided to cover the following sections:(i)  machinery, including roller, screen and transfer printing, the application of dye streams, fixation and washing equipment (ii)  mechanical and chemical factors affecting the quality of printed carpet (iii)  special techniques, such as the currently popular resist printing.Although nylon is by far the most important fibre, the printing of other carpet fibres is discussed. Finally, likely future developments are outlined.
