The limitations of body thickeners and the development of emulsion systems, which eventually led to pigment printing establishing it;relf, are discussed. The disadvantages of such systems are then described and the subsequent introduction of synthetic thickeners outlined as well as their advantages and the reason for their continued development which e entually led to solvent‐free printing becoming commercially viable. A description of the use o f synthetic thickeners in areas other than pigment printing is also given and possible areas of future developments are predicted.
