The numerous studies of the formation of self‐coloured polymers, based on anthraquinone residues, is summarized. In these polymers, the chromophoric groups are an integral part of the polymer. The possible structural types of these polymers are discussed in relation to the methods used to incorporate the anthraquinone‐based chromophoric groups in the polymer chains. The possibility of using such polymers as self‐coloured plastics or fibres is considered but this possibility is regarded as of lesser importance compared with the use of such polymers for other purposes, such as redox catalysts, and heat resistant pigments, plastics and fibres.
