This paper describes the basic principles of hot mercerizing, which can be combined with scouring by including a steaming chamber in the mercerizing sequence. It outlines the benefits that arise from adoption of the new process in respect of improved finished‐fabric properties and by way of economic advantages in capital cost and works layout and various operating costs such as labour, power, steam, water, etc. The operating costs of the new process have been accurately calculated and are displayed in this paper as tabular comparisons with costs of plant employing traditional mercerizing and scouring procedures.
