Past efforts to characterize the chemical structure of pyrazolone dyes have been extensive but confusing to follow. This paper is an attempt to summarize past efforts chronologically thereby giving the reader insight into the reasoning behind conflicting data and interpretation. The next paper will discuss infrared characterization of the pyrazolone dyes and provide support for the conclusions presented here.
