The effect of reduced and unreduced sulphur dyes an the oxidation of cellulose by hypochlorite, at different pH values, has been investigated in terms of the amount of oxygen consumed by the respective dyeings and of the physical and chemical properties of the oxidised dyeings. Thionol Ultra Green B, which was earlier shown [6] to be a protective dye in the photochemical degradation of cotton, has been found to be active when present in the reduced state during the oxidation of cellulose by hypochlorite
