The different types of auxiliaries used in the dyeing of man‐made fibres with disperse dyes are considered. The requirements of dispersing agents are discussed in relation to the chemical nature and properties of the agent (anionic, cationic or non‐ionic). The uses and properties of carriers are discussed, and, in particular, the carrier dyeing of fibre blends is described. A thorough understanding of the properties of auxiliaries enables the dyer to obtain the best results.
