Irradiation with sunlight of an aqueous solution of Rhodamine B (C.I. 45170) (I) produces several detectable products, two of which have been isolated and shown to be chloro‐Rhodamine B (V) and dichloro‐Rhodamine B (IV). These compounds are also obtained from the reaction of Rhodamine B with hydrogen peroxide and from acetone photosensitisation. A mechanism for their formation is proposed.
