Factors influencing the recognition of camouflage are discussed. Of these factors, only contrasts of brightness and of colours can be measured. Contrasts of texture and the geometry of boundaries between contrasting zones are also important. There are three main land backgrounds: white (snow), green (vegetation) and tan (desert and rock). Green backgrounds are discussed in detail. Finally, the basic procedure to conceal a target is outlined.
